About Terri, Jonathan and Scott
Dedicated to Suicide Prevention
Our Story
Terri Erbacher and Jonathan Singer met in 2012 working on the world’s first public art suicide prevention mural, the Finding the Light Within mural through the City of Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Department. One day, Terri asked Jonathan, “Hey, do you know if there’s a practical suicide prevention text for school professionals – something a school psychologist or social worker could pull off their shelf and look up exactly what they need to help them with a suicidal kid? No? Well, let’s write one.”
Scott Poland came into the picture during the book proposal phase. One reviewer suggested including a chapter on liability. The editor at Routledge said that the reviewer who made the suggestion was willing to write the chapter if we included them as a co-author. When we found out it was Scott Poland, the author of one of the very first texts on working with suicidal students in schools, we were thrilled. “Yes, let’s sign him up!”
Two years later we had a book in hand, the first edition of Suicide in Schools: A Practitioner’s Guide to Multilevel Prevention, Assessment, Intervention and Postvention. We’ve been honored to travel all over the country working with school districts to help develop or refine tailored suicide prevention policies and protocols, train staff, and talk with parents.
In 2018, Routledge contacted us and said that we had a best-seller on our hands and they wanted a second edition. After four years of editing and updating, we’re excited to announce the publication of the 2nd edition of Suicide in Schools, published in 2024.
